A HEART WARMING DELIGHT

FILM: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
DIRECTOR: Aditya Chopra
CAST: Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, Vinay Pathak

In the classic comedy Chachi 420 Kamal Hasan played a double role. One in which he looked like his normal self and the other in which he had to look like an old chachi. No one in this world could actually say that the old woman was actually Kamal Hasan. The make up was just brilliant.
Here, the two looks of SRK are pretty different from each other, but not that one cannot recognise that these are the same people. Unfortunately though in this movie, we were made to believe that the heroine did not know in whole of the movie that the two are the same! The whole movie is built up on this really weak plot and this is the biggest minus of the movie.

If somehow we ignore this mistake and rather term it as an "artistic liberty", then this movie is one of the bests this year. Our female protagonist, Taani, played by debutant Anushka Sharma and Surinder Sahni(Khan) get married under bizarre circumstances! And there begins the story as Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi!

The character of Surinder is supposed to be the USP of the movie. The reflection of the common man in the gallis of Amritsar. Full shirt, grey pants, best buy sasta sport shoe , champu hairstyle, fat glasses and the moustache! Honestly though Shahrukh has sported much much costlier and trendier things, he has not looked so sexy before. This has honestly made the common man a more sexier item than ever before.

So now the chemistry between the couple is increasing. Suri is sweet and disciplined and unexpressive but very very romantic at heart. Taani was bubbly, but is trying to kill her old self and is compelling her soul for a compromise with life. Suri senses that. He doesnt want compromise. He wants love (which he in the movie pronounces as lau!!)

Now Taani loves dancing and wants to take part in a dance competition. Suri, to see her dance becomes Raj(again, Raj) with the help of his hair stylist friend Vinay Pathak who plays Bobby and as always plays it brilliantly!! He transforms the champu hairstyle into a spiky one, the loose full shirt into a tight T shirt, the grey pant to sexy faded jeans and the fat glasses to matching goggles. The rather quiet Suri is suddenly transformed into a blabber mouth Jat, Raj.

The later part of the movie is based on the beautiful lines of self vs self which I may not like to reveal. But it is pure magic what follows. Though my initial comment about the minus point in the movie might make me sound that the attention to detail was poor, but no, Adi has done a good job with it. He has canvased Amritsar very beautifully throughout and has made the movie simple and charming.

Coming to performances now. This has to be one of the best performances by Khan. He has portrayed two characters with complete ease. His expressions and mannerisms while playing Suri were the biggest plus in this performance. I dont know whether Khan gets to meet common people at length and actually observe their mannerisms but the way he has done it is really hats off to him. Anushka has shown complete ease considering its her debut. Its obviously a better debut performance than what Deepika Padukone or Sonam Kapoor might have produced. Vinay Pathak is always a charm and plays Bobby very nicely.

One observation I made was that there was a lot of borrowed maal in this movie. Dialogues from OSO and KANK were lifted and at times extended. Like the "Phir Milenge" in KANK was converted to Hum Hai Raahi Pyaar Ke, Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte. Then the song Phir Milenge reminded everyone of Om Shanti Om (lets find out whether Yash Raj cut costs by taking udhar ka used costume from Red Chillies). All this was though to induce comedy in the movie and it was successful in doing so. And if you observe SRK from top to toe, you would observe that he wears the same Tag Heuer watch he wore in Don in one of the scenes.

Though I expect a mixed response for this movie, it still will create its own space in the hearts of the poeple and the box office. It will teach and melt your heart and make you believe that there is something extraordinary in every ordinary jodi!! The moral of the story is that you can get something by being someone else, but if you want everything, you have to be yourself, howsoever you are.

pranav, well i think i will have to write another article now explaining why i gave 7 to this one. Its a matured script explained in a funky way, thats Srks style and this time the script was too heavy for the aam janta to lift it. I know that the funk was junk at times and things were shifting from reality. But as i told ur friend rohit, that u cannot find reality in cinema and cinema in reality! You cant argue what a director has shown unless he is successful in explaining his point with that liberty!! i hope i can explain this much better in my next article....and by the way i dont think ur friend has a good usage of language, i mean u cannot be a good reviewer if u use words like stupid and paisa wapas.... one has to be decent even while reviewing, say Tashan or something!! hahaha ... signing off..take care!

dude.......ur a total SRK fan!!!..tell me one thing.....how could u like paheli ????.....is there even one SRK movie u hated???.....

soaham said...

plenty of srk movies are not worth talking abt.... i agree i like srk but its effect doesnt show on my reviewing. Paheli was a flop and was artistically superior to many contemporary movies, doesnt mean that it was horrible. Its one of the bests the Indian cinema has seen...if u need further justification i can either talk to u on paheli or may b write an article on it~~

to be a critic one should have seen a certain number of movies...i dont think ur remotely close to that number...and your number can never reach mine for sure...no offense

its a fact

a guy rating a piece of crap like RNBDJ as 7 on 10 is not a critic, he's a fan...

i'm sure given a chance even famous critics like Rajeev Masand will use the filthiest lang possible to review certain movies...and nobody said a critic should be like this...wht you are is what you are...and also a review should be fun to read rather than being a page of boring sentences

anyways u seriously need to work on your movie taste..

advise-don't watch too many hindi films

to gautham:
as soon as i rated this movie 7/10, i knew i would be questioned. One big mistakes the so called english movie lovers like you make is keep comparing desi movies with hollywood. I think its like comparing two cultures or two religions. Movies always reflect a community and a class of people. We Indians belong to a class where we need entertainment, songs, superstars and unrealism to learn some nice aspect of art. In most SRK movies like DDLJ, K3G, K2H2, KHNH and OSO and now RNBDJ this format has been followed. I say this even after watching all the parts of THe Godfather which is no doubt one of the bests ever. But to an Indian crowd, a Micheal Corleone with a slow background score and a great manly personality is boring. May be people of ur genius only can relate and understand and appreciate such things. Not a chaiwala or autowala. He cannot understand wat true love is by watching movies like Casablanca or Titanic, but would love it if a great thouhgt of love is expressed to him through a hero heroine villain songs and dance!! Bollywood is all about that. Its the common mans industry. Keeping that in mind, while rating Bolly movies you dont really scrutinize each scene or ask why and how....but u just know that a movie is good if it makes u smile in the end and has a certain message. In Rnbdj, the dualism of a person to attain what he cannot attain by being himself is seen and that is a thing which an english flick mite have made in a more serious or less colourful way(Which would have grabbed golden globes), but here in India, we make everything with Masala to make it a good sunday watch. I know you would not accept what i said and you dont like my reviews but I would love if u just keep commenting on my reviews coz i m a learner and i m learning. People of ur genius only can help me out and I say all this in the most non sarcastic sense. Thank you gautham and I hope you keep coming here.

Cheers

to cjs:

hello cjs! i learn from ur comments that you really are in a state of anger after reading my review of RNBDJ. I think i can explain it a little if you read the comment I gave to gautham.

Artistic Liberty is the word which governs cinema. Be it cinema from any country, artistic liberty exists. When you show a man flying in the sky jst to stress on a point that he is a superhero, he is a superman, that is artistic liberty in interest of explaining a story line, a common one of love and revenge, in a more flashy and brilliant way.

Similarly the concept of "love is forever" and love never dies thing is expressed through a punarjanam artistic liberty in Om Shanti Om. Like the dualism of human nature is portrayed with the help of Ghosts in Paheli. And a similar dualism of character is shown in RNBDJ. THe liberty taken here is that his wife couldnt recognise him sans his moustache. Unbelievabe it is, but it is the liberty taken by art to move on to a bigger canvas. And mind you, its not the first time such a thing is done in cinema. Take english movies which you are so proud of. Take Clark Kent of Superman. Chashma lagaya to badal gaya, chashma utara, blue suit pehni to superman!!! There are tonnes of other such "acclaimed" movies whcih have taken such liberties.

Artistic Liberties are tools to make narration simpler for common audience to enjoy a movie. And we being critics(if u consider me one), should not see if RNBDJ was as great as Godfather or not. I mean they are different works of art altogether, with different mottos, with different intentions, made in different countries and made in a different time(1972 AND 2008!!) Its utter stupidity to compare and learn criticising a movie. I see Hollywood movies too, plenty of them. And I see them with a different expectation. I know those will be continuos two hour movies with entertaining dialogues and an intriguing story(not always) but when it comes to Bollywood I know that the story might be the same old (not always these days some good scripts have come up) and i know that what is going to happen and i know that there will be interesting dance sequences. But if all that can make me smile and teach me something good about life then why is it bad!!

My question is that.....I would love that you come again and tell me if you accept what i just said...

And truly, I need to learn reviewing. I am new to this thing. Infact my deep interest in movies is a one year old thing. Friends like you can help me become something as good as you in the long learn. I need to learn from you seriously and not only from you from everything which God has put before me and everything worth learning whihc i encounter in life. THat is the purpouse of life, rite cjs??

if not for the mention of god in ur answer i kind of like ur reply...
my dear critic mate, u know what the primary duty of a critic is?...to not let people watch stupidity...lets get simpler..do u like corruption or people who loot the country's wealth...and in this case also the creative wealth...thts exactly wht is happenin here...mother f's like Aditya Chopra are not working hard for their money and wht they r makin is a hell a lot of money...as far as i know these chopras and johars have never lived in an actual Indian village and dont know a darn thing abt it...people dont wear flashy clothes and play under trees all the while in our villages...its because of the power given to these idiots in the industry that a lot of budding and amazing talent never comes into picture...this is just atrocious (if ur lukin for a big word) and do me a favor, the next time ur reviewing a loser movie like this, dont use words like creative liberty or shit...they dont deserve it

the next point, NEVER undermine the Indian audience, we r as good as any other LA loser...and i dont like superman except for the special effects...

i'm a Telugu and my fav film industry in India is the
Tamil movie industry even tough the Telugu films are much bigger (budget wise)the quality of films tht are made in Tamil is jus unbelievable...the number of experiments and new talent which comes out here can be found nowhere else

and with the kind of budgets hindi movies can afford...look at the terrible state of affairs there...90 percent of the movies are super cliches and the remainder of good movies dont make enough money to move on...so we as critics should encourage quality and originality...Indian films should be up there and to make tht possible is our duty...never consider urself small...if u believe in it, jus go for it...never say tht Indian movies are like this and will continue to stay like this...thts utter bull crap...fck the bad movies...laud the good ones...and soon Indian movies will make it big...

and u wanna know wht real Indian cinema is?..try these directors:
Shyam Benegal
Govind Nihlani
Mani Ratnam
Bala
Chandrashekar Yeleti
Sathyajit Ray
RGV (only a few)

ever heard of a japanese film maker called Akira Kurosawa...this dude doesnt do anything beyond the culture of japanese movies (mostly samurai and martial art movies) and his movies make it more often to the oscars than that of most hollywood greats (not only in the foreign lang category, but also in most of the technical categories)...thts because of the time he spends on learning every detail of every film he makes..chck out his films..

be in touch and tell ur friends abt daskino.wordpress.com...

c ya

soaham said...

The names you mentioned are my favourites. Will soon check up for Kurosawa. I like your reply too and though i do disagree at certain points but I understand ur motive. And yes I beleive in your motive too. Its upon us to take Indian cinema, there. But I do not say we entirely change our style of making movies, that is the song dance shit, but bring more originality to the script, venture into new styles of making cinema, create new technical methods to create cinema, that surely is not wat the johar's and chopras are pursuing, very true.! I think a movie like Welcome to Sajjanpur deserves acolades. It has got dance, comedy but a very original and strong script backed with brilliant performances. Even a movie like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na which is so Bollywood in its style, is such a treat to watch because it is so simple, original and strong. But let me tell you something more, Its not only INdia where good cinemas dont sell. Even in the USA and UK, many good movies get fucked out of the theatres very soon. You need to market a good product. What India needs to do is put money on marketing good cinema rather than going bald with a line on your head promoting some stupid Aamir Khan re-re-make of an english classic.

i dont know how far this comments thing is gonna go...

i have absolutely nothing against nach gaana...i love OSO..a movie should have songs only in the right amount...most of the movies in India don't need songs and the ones which do need songs need only 2 or 3 at the most..

another thing - the makers resort to songs as a remedy to come out of screenplay traps and sell the movie purely on songs...coz with six songs, u have 30 minutes of movie to sell..

tht is why Chak De is one of my fav movies which has only one very well placed song (even though the movie's inspired by a million hollywood flicks)

the thing abt good movies not making it big in Hollywood..

they have the oscars to come to the rescue of small and unpopular films...
we do have the national awards, but, the award night is so poorly produced that not even a hardcore movie buff is interested in these awards
